Sofia Athanasoulia (Scenic Voice), Greece (1991)

Based in Rotterdam

BA Theatre Studies, University of Patras, Greece

MA Scenography, HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht

As a scenographer with a background in theatre studies and music, her artistic practice focuses on creating immersive spatial experiences that explore transformation, materiality, and the boundaries between the human and non-human.

In her current research, she investigates how materials and atmospheres can embody processes of decay, regeneration, and dehumanization, connecting existing spaces with imagined worlds.

Working with a palette of scenographic tools—including sound, music, light, video, and sculpture—she is expanding her practice through bioplastics. These materials serve as temporal, performative matter, revealing cycles of fragility, transformation, and renewal. Through their evolving shapes and textures, she examines how matter, space, and perception intertwine to create sensorial experiences that challenge notions of permanence, identity, and human-centered perspectives.
